Valencia Finn Diary (or
Nock's notes)
Any Finn sailor would love to be in Valencia at the moment,
not only on the AC boats but in their spare time going for a Finn. Our man
on the spot, Anthony Nossiter will be keeping Finn fans updated with the
latest goings on, including action shots of the Valencia Finn training
days and the inaugural 'Mike Cup' (a trophy the boat builders made for
the Sunday race Club Championship regatta!) Nock says, “Valencia is much
better for us Finn sailors as we all have our boats nearby!” On any given
day you might find Ben, Percy, Bart, Nocka, Dave Burrows, Britta, the Big
CZE, Raffa, Karlo and Piero. Even the old Luca gets out for a play.
May 5th 2006
Nock’s diary “Well I gotta share this with someone...went
surfing with Perce yesterday where we launched our Finns from. The waves
block the entrance to the harbour and we often surf out past the entrance
for the best waves. Bart and Ben went sailing later in the day...
still decent surf. However, the great Bart Simpson was cleaned up by a
nice ‘set’ on returning to harbour... mast in two pieces! I don't know how
they even made it out in the first place; at 7am the waves were five foot.
The big fella was dark after showing some magic speed on that training
run!
Last week Britta experienced the same washing machine, but
somehow muscled it up (as you do when you’re 110kg) in between 'sets' and
made it out... the extra 30kg helped to power him through the waves. 10
minutes later he broke his rudder and was lucky to make it back in while
Bart and I enjoyed a 3 hour session. They were the biggest waves I have
sailed in since the windy day of the 1999 Melbourne Gold Cup (not
including Southern Ocean). The Cup boats here in Valencia are designed for
the lighter airs...but not the Valencia of the last few weeks.
I will send some pictures soon. The Acts are getting close
so Finn sailing will quieten down over the next few weeks. Must nap; early
bench with Britta tomorrow.”
