2nd International BMW TirouxWaldmüller Cup in Schwerin

The Schwerin Sail Days ended on Sunday with victories for the Netherlands in the Olympic 470 and Finn classes. Although no single race could be sailed on Saturday, owing to the calm conditions, the light east wind on Sunday was sufficient to enable three 470 races and two Finn dinghy races to be held in brilliant sunshine. Originally, a total of 10 races had been planned for each class.

In the invitational regatta with prize money of nearly 10,000 euros, 25 top-notch yachtsmen from Israel, Denmark, Poland, the Netherlands and Germany went to the start in each class.

In the Finn class, Karel von Hellemond (NED 41) won with second and third placed races in front of the Schweriner Yacht Club’s Andre Budzin (GER 711), with one first place. Third and fourth places were taken by the Dutch yachtsmen Jan Willem Kok (NED 780) and Wietze Zetzema (NED 64) in front of Kenneth Boggild (DEN 231). The first five places were awarded prize money of between 2,000 euros (1st place, 470) and 300 euros (5th place, Finn).

The second International BMW TirouxWaldmüller Cup in Schwerin was this year combined with the Schwerin Sailing Days, which considerably enhanced the attractiveness for the yachtsmen, about 7,000 spectators and also for the sponsors. The highlight of the windless day was definitely the party for the yachtsmen on Saturday evening in the BMW marquee, which demanded more or less everything from certain yachtsmen and was the cause of tired faces and slower reactions the following morning.

It is planned to conduct this international regatta on an invitational basis once again next year; information, dates etc. will be available from early 2006 under www.schweriner-segler-verein.de.
