The International Finn Association delegation to the 2019 World Sailing Annual Conference in Bermuda has returned empty handed. The eight submissions to reinstate the Finn in the slate for the 2024 Olympic Games were rejected by both the committees and the Council.
British Finn sailors have long dominated the front end of the sport, but for the last four years there has also been an U23 programme run solely by the British class association to prepare young sailors for the big step to the British Sailing Team. It was a huge success, but the decision by World Sailing to drop the Finn from the 2024 Olympics has meant this promising team has been dismantled, with all the young sailors stopping Finn sailing, or even stopping sailing altogether.
Huge numbers of words have been written about the arguments for putting the Finn back into the Olympic Games. Next week, the Finn class will be making its case once again at the 2019 World Sailing Conference in Bermuda to try and rebalance the proposed slate for 2024.
For the 2019 World Sailing annual conference in Bermuda the Finn Class has made eight submissions to try to ‘rebalance the slate’ and reinstate the Finn as Olympic equipment for 2024 and beyond.
