Andy Maloney secured the 50 Trofeo Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR on Saturday after an epic medal race in 18-20 knots, just doing enough to finish close enough to race winner Giles Scott to take the title by 2 points. Scott took the silver while Josh Junior crossed in sixth to win the bronze.
Andy Maloney will take a six point lead over Giles Scott into Saturday’s medal race to fight for the gold medal in the 50 Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR in Palma, Mallorca. Maloney’s teammate Josh Junior remains in third with a comfortable gap on the rest of the fleet.
After the Kiwis had pretty much had things their own way so far this week, Olympic champion Giles Scott, from Britain, struck back on the breezier fourth day of the 50 Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR in Palma, Mallorca with a 4, 2 to move up to second overall. Despite having his worst day so far, overall leader Andy Maloney, from New Zealand actually extended his lead to 11 points, while teammate Josh Junior drops one place to third, on equal points with Scott, with just two more races to sail before Saturday’s medal race.
Andy Maloney, from New Zealand, continues to lead the 86 boat Finn fleet after the third day of racing at the 50 Trofeo S.A.R Princesa Sofia IBEROSTAR in Palma, Mallorca. Both Junior and Olezza took race wins in the gold fleet, but for much of the fleet it was a high scoring day.
