Björn Allansson (SWE) has moved to the top of the ISAF World Sailing Rankings for the first time in his career. The October 20th from ISAF release gives him a 31 point lead over Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) and a 79 point lead over the previous No. 1 Giles Scott (GBR).

With the ISAF World Sailing Rankings on a 12-month rolling cycle, Scott dropped from World No. 1 to World No. 4 as he now only counts five regattas. Allansson moved up from World No. 2 to World No.1. Both Allansson and Kljakovic Gaspic are counting points from six regattas.

For Allansson, this caps off his one of his best seasons in the Finn which began with his first major victory at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne. He followed this with an eighth at the SWC Miami and a sixth at the SWC Hyeres.

His good form continued at the Europeans in La Rochelle where he narrowly missed the cut for the medal race, and while he produced a string of good individual race results at the ISAF World Championships in Santander, he had too many high scores to make a serious dent at the top.

He said on his new status. “For me it's fantastic to be World No. 1. It been a target of mine for a long time. When it was announced, they broadcast the news on national television on prime time in Sweden to the great joy of my sponsors and myself.”

However, Allansson is realistic about his progress and the task that still lies ahead. “As part of my preparations for the Rio Games, it's a big step along the way. With that said I'm well aware of the improvements that need to be made from my side moving into the 2015 season. I'm really thankful that Paul McKenzie will be helping me again as my coach in that process.”
